THE SOUTH SWELL SERIES
FOUND ARTIFACTS TURNED FINE ART - THE STORY OF THE SURFER AND THE SEA.
When I saw these surf fins buried at the bottom of a rusty bucket at a local swap meet, inspiration hit me out of nowhere. Working with surf fins was uncharted territory for me, but I felt an irresistible pull to bring them to life with resin. 💧
As an artist, I've always been conscious of not hoarding materials that would eventually gather dust, and I like to think of myself as an "intentional curator" with a touch of indecisiveness 😅. But as I carefully selected each rusted, cracked, scratched, and mismatching surf fin, a profound realization washed over me. These fins had once danced with the waves, reflecting someone's deep passion for the ocean. They deserved more than being forgotten at the bottom of a bucket; they deserved a second chance to tell their stories.
Those of you who've followed my creative journey since the grazing board days know my dedication to crafting functional art for your homes. However, the creation of these surf fins marked a turning point. Each fin now bears the narrative of its unique function, an extraordinary artifact shaped and cherished in its heyday, now transformed into a treasure to be cherished in a home rooted in coastal design.
Through this creative process, I've undergone a remarkable mental evolution. My initial fixation on creating works that serve a function for others has given way to a deeper purpose - transforming found artifacts into fine art that illuminates their relationship with the environment and the stories they hold.
With a nod to the origin of each of these surf fins and the life they once served, each artwork will be named after beaches and their legendary waves that have shaped local surf culture into what it is today.
