"It is not an Artist's job to please anyone, but to bravely do the work that they are most compelled to do. It is the public's job to bravely seek out and appreciate the work that resonates with them"

It is well known that natural occurring phenomenon bound by the confines of nature exists within the scope of divinity and omnipotence. Nature is mystifying, powerful, yet fragile. It serves to inspire and enlighten; it helps grapple with mortality in a system of reciprocity rooted in life and death — the circle of life.

Laguna Beach based artist, Mikayla Gierut explores natural oceanic and seaside geographical theme using epoxy resin. It is a direct nod to her coastal upbringing and environmental science background. She creates one of a kind cheeseboards using renewable materials such as ethically sourced wood, diverting almost all studio waste from the landfills via reutilization, and using a non-toxic, no VOC, natural based/food safe resin.

So from my understanding, your company started by using art as a form of therapy – can you walk us through this?
Of course! Resin really taught me to lose control over being “perfect…
This medium flows like honey when first mixed, and takes several days for my art pieces to fully cure. During this span of time, the resin stretches and moves across my canvas. Once cured, the result can look far different than when it was first poured and there is no going back....

I have always entertained the idea to start a fun pop up market event for small businesses within beach communities that would benefit a new organization each month. Having been a part of pop ups in the past, it is so fun and rewarding to see families come out and shop small while having fun with their neighbors. I believe that all small businesses are the heartbeat of our towns, and I think that there definitely needs to be more events in the future that cater to bringing these communities together year-round.

Mikayla Gierut — owner of Kayla Rae Resin Designs — may only be in her early twenties, but she has already seen major success as an artist and businesswoman. A project which began as a form of therapy for her has since blown up, turning her side hustle into a business as Gierut’s best-sellers are her cheeseboards.
Not only are her functional boards affordable, but 10 percent of their proceeds go to benefit Protect Our Providers, which works to relieve the personal protective equipment shortages many medical professionals are currently facing.

Since graduating college in 2017, self- taught Laguna Beach based artist, Kayla Rae Gierut, had a vision to bridge her education in Environmental Science and her passion for art into one. It was during this time she stumbled across a form of fluid art using an epoxy resin (the same material used to glass surfboards).
Kayla has a goal to put a spin on what we normally consider “art” and create works that serve a function in the everyday home while attaining an affordable price. .

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Gierut.
Mikayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

Art has always been an influential element in my life. I have always tried to use my artistic creativity whenever humanly possible because I knew it was something I was good at and allowed me to approach situations differently than most people.
